Wycombe vs Aston Villa Head-to-Head
This is the fifth-ever meeting between Wycombe and Aston Villa and first since 2016.
In the third round of the 2016 FA Cup, these sides drew 1-1 at Wycombe and Villa won 2-0 in the replay round in Birmingham.
The other meetings were in 2003 and 2005, and Aston Villa won those 5-0 and 8-3, respectively.
Wycombe Off to Fast Start Under New Ownership
- League Two Standings: 3-1-2 (9th)
- Form (All Competitions): W,W,W,D,W
Third tier club Wycombe Wanderers pulled off a 1-0 upset over EFL Championship side Swansea City in the second round of the EFL Cup. Impressively, Wycombe managed the feat on the road and they also defeated Northampton Town 2-0 in the first round.
Now, they have the chance to progress past the third round for the first time since 2006-07. Under new Wycombe Wanderers owner Mikheil Lomtadze the club has ambitions of climbing up the Football League pyramid.
Chief Football Officer Dan Rice was a high-level scout at multiple Premier League clubs and he’s brought in a bunch of young players so far. Midfielder Cameron Humphreys, on-loan from Crystal Palace, has already scored two goals.
Heading into this match, Wycombe are on a six game unbeaten streak, in all competitions. They’re currently 3-1-2 in EFL League One and Humphreys scored the decisive goal in a 2-1 victory over Cambridge last Saturday.
While they are on a good run of form, Wycombe have conceded seven goals in their last four games. The last time Wycombe came up against a Premier League side in the EFL Cup, back in 2021, they lost 6-1 to Manchester City.
Wycombe have a number of players out injured for this match, including Gideon Kodua, Nathan Bishop, Sam Vokes, Brandon Hanlan and Ryan Tafazolli.
Duran Likely to Start for Aston Villa
- Premier League Standings: 4-1 (3rd)
- Form (All Competitions): W,W,W,W,L
Aston Villa’s results over the last few weeks have been excellent. Since losing 2-0 to Arsenal on August 24th, Villa have strung together four straight wins, in all competitions.
At 4-1 in the Premier League, Villa are currently in third place and looking to qualify for the Champions League once again. On Saturday, Villa took down Wolves 3-1 as Morgan Rogers provided two assists.
Rogers has been one of the more unheralded Aston Villa players this season but he causes plenty of problems for opposing defenses with his directness and dribbling ability. Jhon Duran has also scored in three straight EPL games as a substitute.
The young Colombian, who has been touted as the best super sub in the league recently, figures to get a start here. Emery could also field youngsters like Kosta Nedeljkovic and Lamare Bogarde. Joe Gauci could also make his first Aston Villa appearance in goal.
Captain John McGinn came off injured over the weekend and is out for a few weeks. Meanwhile, Matty Cash and Jaden Philogene are both out injured. Plus, Boubacar Kamara and Tyrone Mings are back in full training following long term injuries but neither has returned to action yet.
Wycombe vs Aston Villa Prediction
Even with a bunch of changes, Aston Villa are still expected to win this match on the road. Emery takes cup competitions seriously and with UCL football this season, they have a deeper squad than in seasons past.
Wycombe look to be an improving squad but Villa could be a level too high for the hosts. Villa are 3-0 on the road this season and our Wycombe vs Aston Villa Prediction is that the visitors will win by more than one goal.
Last week, Villa looked comfortable in a 3-0 road victory in Switzerland at Young Boys. Against a lower-level opponent on Tuesday, complacency could seep in but we ultimately expect a comfortable victory.
At Bet365, bettors can use our Wycombe vs Aston Villa prediction to take Villa -1.5 at -129 odds. We’d also keep a close eye on props for Duran to score in this one.
